Stellantis, the multinational automobile conglomerate responsible for the production of Jeep, Citroën, and Maserati cars, has announced with effect the entry of the Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brand Leapmotor into the Indian market. The decision is in line with the plans of Stellantis to increase its portfolio of EVs and respond to the increasing demand for electric mobility in India.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP

In October 2023, Stellantis made a 21% stake purchase in Leapmotor for around €1.5 billion. This deal created Leapmotor International—a 51:49 joint venture between Leapmotor and Stellantis. Under this alliance, Stellantis has obtained exclusive rights to manufacture, sell, and export Leapmotor products in markets outside China. Therefore, moving towards Stellantis’ EV expansion plan globally.

MODELS EXPECTED FOR THE INDIAN MARKET

Though a formal product lineup has not been announced, business sources indicate that Leapmotor is coming to India in two models:

  • Leapmotor T03 Hatchback: A subcompact electric hatchback likely to take on the Tata Tiago EV.
  • Leapmotor C10 SUV: A midsize electric SUV. It is designed to compete with upcoming versions like the Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti eVX.

Stellantis aims to launch a total of six Leapmotor EVs in India by 2027 across different segments and consumer preferences.

PRODUCTION AND LOCALIZATION

Early operations are likely to comprise assembly of completely knocked down (CKD) kits at Stellantis’ current plant in Ranjangaon, Maharashtra. This strategy enables a faster market launch. At the same time it assesses the feasibility of full-fledged local manufacturing on the basis of market response and business feasibility.

DISTRIBUTION AND DEALERSHIP NETWORK

Leapmotor cars will most probably be distributed via Stellantis India’s current dealership network. Which also includes retail outlets for brands such as Citroën and Jeep. The aim here is to take advantage of installed infrastructure to maximize market penetration and customer reach.

MARKET CONTEXT AND COMPETITION

Leapmotor’s foray in India is just at a time when the EV sector is seeing heightened action from foreign companies. Vietnamese electric vehicle company VinFast is set to introduce two locally produced electric SUVs in India by the second half of 2025. Tesla, on the other hand, has its plans to expand to India currently held up as it is ongoingly negotiating with the government over import duties.

CONCLUSION

Stellantis’ launch of Leapmotor in the Indian market reflects the company’s focus on increasing its offerings in EVs. Therefore, riding the surge in demand for electric mobility products. By maximizing its global partnership with Leapmotor and existing manufacturing and distribution networks, Stellantis will look to take a solid position in India’s growing EV market.
